Association Executives Want an End to Economic Uncertainty
NEW YORK, October 26 -- Most association leaders expect their specific business or industry to benefit from a strong Republican showing in the upcoming midterm elections. However, a substantial minority believe the election results will make little difference, according to a recent survey by the association management firm Kellen Company.
An overwhelming majority of respondents – 78 percent – agreed that the continuation of a congressional stalemate would be bad for business. Many cited “economic uncertainty” as one of their primary concerns.
More than 56 percent of respondents said they agreed with the statement “a strong Republican showing should be good for our business or industry,” while just over 43 percent disagreed.
Most respondents – 42 percent – identified themselves as independents, 37 percent as Republicans and 20 percent as Democrats. The survey, which polled over 2000 association leaders in America, was conducted in mid-October.
“Taken together, the results show a high degree of dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in our country and a lack of confidence in the ability of either party to make much difference,” commented Kellen Company CEO Peter Rush. “In this respect – and not surprisingly – association leaders reflect the views of the public at large. That said, while the survey showed that most association leaders believe that a stronger Republican showing will benefit the economy, the overwhelming response to the survey was one of caution.
The feelings of many respondents appeared to be caught in the comment of one association executive who said, “The less Washington does the better it is for my industry.”
